Job Description

Would you like to be at the heart of developing innovative and transformative ideas? Are you interested in being part of a team that identifies how space technology can address UK and global societal challenges? Do you want a Senior Service Design position which will make a real difference? If so, you may be who we’re looking for!

We are currently seeking a Service Designer to work with and support technical specialists, business experts, and end-users, blazing the trail in the space industry with a needs-driven rather than technology-pushed approach to application development.

This is a highly networked role that requires an ability to work under pressure and to challenging deadlines. It requires demonstrable experience in service design or related areas. This is a hybrid role with our principal offices in Harwell Oxfordshire.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Scope, plan and deliver design research and service design projects.

  • Design and facilitate creative workshops bringing together multiple stakeholders

  • Carry out synthesis and analysis of user research and communicate results to relevant stakeholders

  • Work with stakeholders to develop and evaluate concepts based on user requirements.

  • Manage internal and stakeholder engagement, e.g. liaising with project managers, data analysts, various internal stakeholders and end user-communities.

  • Develop and contribute to the User-centred Design teams’ tools and processes.

Skills & Experience required:

  • You have demonstrable experience in one or more of the following design-related areas: service, interaction, UX, strategy.

  • You have experience in planning, scoping, and delivering design research and service design projects.

  • You can comfortably express yourself and your ideas with your preferred tools (e.g., Adobe Creative Cloud, Miro).

  • You can explain why understanding need is essential to creating a sustainable solution, where sustainable doesn’t just mean green.

  • You understand and have experience of User-centred Design and the double diamond.

  • You are creative, organised, and able to motivate yourself and others.

  • You can work with a range of internal and external stakeholders e.g., project managers, data analysts, internal stakeholders and end user communities.

  • You are confident to design and facilitate creative workshops bringing together multiple stakeholders.

Nice to have

  • You have worked with technical teams to deliver digital service projects from inception to delivery.

  • You are entrepreneurial and either understand or are keen to learn how to create a sustainable business case.

  • You prototype as proof of concept, work visually as much as possible.

  • You have supported and mentored more junior designers

We are looking for people who:

  • Are "doers" and want to see change happen in the world. You believe that User-centred Design is an essential tool in making change happen.

  • Act as translators, encouraging and facilitating disparate groups with differing skills, values, and approaches to work together.

  • Can tell stories and use these narratives to bring people along with you.

  • Are naturally curious, are not afraid to ask questions and take time to listen and learn.

  • Want to influence how the team works, rather than simply following orders.

You know you have been successful when…

  • You have brought clarity to a project by defining a problem and defining how design can be used to address it.

  • You have developed a productive working relationship with project stakeholders bringing people along with you.

  • Your user research serves as a foundation to develop impactful products and services.

How we work:

We strive to create a high trust environment that enables team members to bring their whole selves to work – this helps to create the foundations of an innovation culture.
Our shared values are critical to this:

  • We care - for our people, our partners, and our planet

  • We connect - and engage with people and ideas

  • We learn - and grow, as people and as an industry

Underpinning this is our belief in great teams, our combined efforts will always deliver outcomes beyond that of any individual providing we are honest through debate, experiment and reflect, and create shared resolutions in support of our purpose. Live these values, work to our principles, take ownership to deliver, and we are certain you will thrive with us.
