Job Description

As Legal Advisor, you will be working as part of an established legal team to provide a professional, high quality and timely in-house legal advice and support service to HarperCollins Publishers.

Key Responsibilities

  • Supporting the General Counsel and the Director of Legal Services

  • Providing sound and sensible legal advice to designated areas of the business

  • Managing day to day data protection questions and working with the HarperCollins Global Compliance Counsel based in New York on data protection, privacy and compliance initiatives and their implementation in the UK

  • Identifying and resolving issues in proposed commercial transactions and identifying the implications upon the business (including risk/benefit analysis)

  • Timely and accurate information gathering in order to provide prompt and authoritative advice

  • Drafting contracts including licensing arrangements, complex publishing rights agreements and warehouse distribution agreements

  • Reviewing third party contracts as applicable

  • Assisting in the preparation of  basic transaction documentation to include reviewing NDA agreements and term sheets relating to M&A

  • Negotiate contracts on behalf of the business where appropriate.

  • Assisting in the resolution of disputes and avoidance of litigation

  • Drafting appropriate agreements and assisting in structuring transactions for all digital initiatives including e-books, audio and print on demand

  • Supporting pre-publication legal review of books, covers and publicity initiatives.

Skills and Experience Required

  • Newly Qualified solicitor - 2 years

  • A highly competent commercial lawyer who has worked in a challenging legal environment with some experience of data protection and privacy

  • Exceptional inter-personal skills and communications skills

  • Highly organised and able to effectively prioritise and manage competing workloads

  • Accustomed to working towards deadlines

  • Capable of building relationships and trust with a diverse range of people from editors to members of the executive

  • Knowledge or awareness of the media landscape

  • A passion for books
