Job Description
Arcadia is a family philanthropy that works to conserve and restore nature, record cultural heritage and promote open access to knowledge. You will be part of our Nature team, managing a portfolio of around ten high profile grants with a total value of around $50m. There will be some opportunities to develop proposals for new grants and renewals under the guidance of the Director of Nature. You will be part of a small expert team managing Arcadia, Lund Trust and other family grant-making.
You must:
have conducted and communicated academically-rigorous independent research, ideally through a higher research degree or equivalent experience;
have experience of analysing and summarising quantitative and qualitative data and applying critical thinking;
have knowledge of either large-scale conservation and habitat restoration outside the UK, marine conservation or conservation planning;
be good at managing multiple tasks and balancing short-term and long-term objectives;
be able to present and write clearly and concisely for different audiences;
be comfortable advising senior decision-makers and responding to their questions;
have experience of living and working outside the UK;
be fluent in English and preferably at least one other language; and
have the right to work in the UK.
We encourage applications from people with an academic background in the humanities (especially history of science or historical geography). Previous grant-making experience is not required.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Grant management
review grantees’ reports and evaluate their impact, and provide summaries and other updates to our board
process grant payment requests
meet regularly with grantees and key partners to maintain relationships and share information
provide plans for and reports on the grants assigned to you
keep grant records and grant payment schedules up-to-date
Grant development
help research and prepare concept notes for new grants and renewals of existing grants
work with potential grantees to help develop approved concepts to final awards
Analysis and evaluation
conduct research, evaluation and analysis for specific grants, under the guidance of the Director of Nature
provide support for larger evaluation and research projects, under the guidance of the Director of Nature
help research and prepare reports and presentations on behalf of our board
Communications
help draft newsletter articles, social media posts and other updates about your grantees and Arcadia’s work
represent Arcadia at external events, including giving occasional presentations about our work to external audiences online and in-person
Team working
agree priorities for your own work and development with the Director of Nature
contribute to team meetings and training events
contribute to a productive and inclusive team culture
New ideas
stay abreast of new thinking in the sector
seek opportunities to develop your own ideas and professional profile.
