Job Description

The Data Systems Manager is a new role which leads a team of data engineers and works closely with data analysts and stakeholders in the creation and management of Comic Relief’s Enterprise Data Model to deliver insight-driven decision making.  They also play a leading role in the work to transform the organisation into a data- and insight-driven charity. 

This is primarily a team manager role which also delivers some hands-on technical leadership in the implementation of data solutions encompassing collection, processing, enriching and use of data throughout the organisation, using appropriate technologies to build, maintain and support web services/Application Programming Interface (APIs), data integrations, databases and data storage design. 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Work with Head of Data & Analytics, consultants and internal stakeholders to define and deliver the data engineering aspects of the data & analytics maturity project

  • Build and lead a motivated, highly effective team of data engineers to deliver best-in-class reporting and analytics platforms for Comic Relief

  • To be a hands-on technical lead for data engineering, partnering with data analysts to deliver data platforms and datasets to meet existing operational needs, resolving issues and  implementing / improving the relevant systems and processes where necessary

  • Assist Head of Data & Analytics in Identification, definition, and implemention of the processes, standards and governance required to allow all users - to use data in an efficient and consistent way.

  • Play a leading role indefining and delivering the data and insight strategy for Comic Relief

  • Lead and manage data engineering projects in collaboration with colleagues in Technology and the wider business using agile, test-and-learn-based approaches.

  • Build strong relationships with data and technology stakeholders, collaborating with them to define and implement the data strategy and initiatives to support organisational objectives.

ESSENTIAL SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES:

  • Experience of defining standards, architecting, developing and supporting software systems for data management, reporting and analysis in a complex and challenging business environment, ideally in the not for profit sector

  • Strong technical understanding, skilled in the use of databases / data structures, reporting, analytics and marketing tools; able to communicate effectively with Engineers, Analysts and business stakeholders..

  • Able to engage and motivate a team to deliver a best-in-class data function, using rapid delivery, test-and-learn approaches

  • Strong SQL skills.

  • Demonstrable experience of streamlining and automating operational business processes.

  • Outstanding and solid software engineering skills – the ability to deliver, maintain and support software and help create an evidence-driven data culture.

  • Skilled communicator, able collaborator and committed to continuous improvement.

  • Curious and creative thinker – to create a learning organisation committed to continuous improvement and always striving to do things better.
