Job Description

Introduction to the role

One More Chapter is an innovative, award-winning publishing division of HarperCollins UK. They are the home of global bestsellers with a remit to be at the forefront of all things digital.

 Combining market-leading digital publishing with the commercial expertise of HarperCollins, the vision for One More Chapter is to close the gap between author, publisher and reader; reacting speedily to reading trends and publishing the best in commercial fiction across all formats – audio, eBook and print.

 We are looking for a new member to join our small but mighty team who is passionate about commercial fiction and delivering high quality books to readers. Do you love processes? We are focused on finding someone who is passionate about delivering top-quality products, who has exceptional organization and time management skills, who can react quickly to changing demands and actively seeks to improve workflow. There will be scope to be innovative and we are always looking at new ways of doing things. Please note, that this is not an acquiring role. This is a fast-paced fiction list and you will be part of a team that works flexibly and has a lot of fun along the way!   

Core responsibilities:

  • Project manage titles to publication schedules and consistently deliver high quality books

  • Be the central point of contact for editorial freelancers and organise the freelance schedule for copyediting and proofreading

  • Ad hoc proofreading

  • Liaise with external stakeholders over manuscripts at each stage of the editorial process for copyedits and proofreads

  • General admin duties and correspondence

  •   Undertake the production work of titles and liaise with internal departments where required, specifically publishing operations, production, audio, rights and design

  • Typeset all titles for print books and eBook using specialist software called Vellum (no prior experience of this software required)

  • Responsibility for updating backlist files for promotions and reprints

  • Creating and receipting POs and setting up suppliers on internal systems

  • Responsibility for ordering author copies from the warehouse to authors, as well as ordering in copies for the editorial team

  • Responsibility for monthly submissions to publishing publications e.g. The Bookseller

Responsibility for title submissions for the HarperCollins group newsletter

Experience required:

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills to express technical and creative vision clearly

  • Excellent organisational skills and experience of working to deadlines

  • Advanced MS Word, Excel, Powerpoint

Skills required:

  • Remains calm under pressure, able to work at pace and to tight deadlines

  • Able to prioritise and manage multiple schedules

  • Capacity to learn and be adept at using multiple editorial and IT systems

  • Happy to work independently as well as part of a team

  • Dynamic and innovative, not afraid to do things differently

  • Excellent attention to detail

  • Active problem solver
