Job Description

Applied is the platform for debiased hiring.

We're pushing back against outdated hiring practices by rebuilding the process and leaving CVs behind. Our product is backed by scientific research, data-driven methodologies and has a purpose: it removes noise, mitigates systemic inequalities, and surfaces the best candidates, taking the guesswork out of hiring.

You can read more about us in the New York Times, Harvard Business Review, TechCrunch and New Scientist and learn more about how we give Candidates useful feedback here.

The Role

We're changing the way hiring is done for good and need a Data Scientist who is passionate about using data to build great product features, solve complex problems at scale and is always asking questions. This person will help us empower our users to be as fair and efficient as they can in their hiring processes and will help us spot opportunities from the datasets we have. At Applied, we have a big mission to make hiring fair and predictive, and we're building a platform to function as a decision consultant to our customers throughout their hiring process.

In your first 6 months at Applied you'll:

  • Make big contributions to our product. You'll be working with the product and engineering team from day one and getting stuck into our scrum process from the very start.

  • Build a highly predictive, scalable and reliable recommendations solution and work with the team to get it out into production and benefiting our users

  • Deploy data science products into production and into customers hands

  • Help us build out our data tooling and infrastructure, laying the groundwork for growing out our data science function

  • Begin to help us plan safe ways of building data science-driven features that make the product more predictive and more efficient

Our Data Scientist should:

- Communicate clearly to the team (and wider company) about projects - helping to bring us all along with the work you're doing and the impact it's having.

- Solve real problems by designing, building and implementing technical solutions into production that are reliable, scalable and well tested. Given we work with people decisions we aim for solutions that are explainable too.

- Be able to choose the right tool and approach for the job

- We tend to use SQL, python and R heavily in data work currently but are always eager to make sure our tech stack empowers us rather than constrains us.

You'll benefit from:

  • Equity in the business

  • Wellbeing benefit and access to Spill

  • Remote working budget

  • Internet allowance

  • Learning & development budget

  • Office subscription via Desana

  • Involvement in other aspects of the business, from strategy, management and training, to shaping team culture

  • Being part of something that's both commercially successful and socially important

We’re a remote first company and our general aim is to have 2 away days throughout the year so we can all meet in person at least a few times. Please note that this role requires that you be within 4 hours of GMT at most, as greater time difference makes collaboration much more difficult.

About Our Product and Engineering Team

A note about our team: we place high value on trust, communication, ambition, accountability, user & data driven decisions, and have a bias towards action and curiosity.

We're a team who:

- Are passionate about making high quality digital products that add real and meaningful value to people's lives

- Care about data, providence and testing. We grew out of a behavioural science background and like to make sure we continually ground ourselves with research.

- Can collaborate effectively, inspire those around them, and start from a position of empathy.

- Understand the business objectives, the needs of the broader team and work with engineering and product managers to prioritise accordingly.

- Are comfortable working in an early-stage environment, and the autonomy and uncertainty that change can bring.

What are the next steps?

Our process is progressive - Instead of submitting a CV, you’ll answer 4 work-related questions. Our goal is to assess your approach to a problem to understand what knowledge and skills you have.

If you work at Applied, you'll need to search for things, so feel free to do this during the application as it isn’t a test.

Your answers will be anonymized, randomized and reviewed by the team. We use these review scores to shortlist and move applications into the interview stage. Our interviews will use real world problems to understand your skills. We think giving feedback is incredibly valuable for candidates, so at the end of the process you'll see how well you performed during the application, and where you can improve.
