Rights and Permissions Manager

Responsible to:  Programme Lead - Production

Team: Education

Term: Permanent

Location: Remote (with some occasional in-person UK meetings)

Hours: 36 hours per week (if full-time – flexible arrangements will be considered. Our core working days are Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, to allow effective collaboration time with colleagues).

Line management responsibility: 1 direct report (Rights and Permissions Officer)

Budget responsibility: Yes

Key external relationships: Suppliers, Curriculum Partners

DBS: An enhanced DBS check may be required for this role.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the development and continuous improvement of rights and permissions (R&P) work across Oak

  • Lead on providing advice, guidance and training for stakeholders on the copyright/permission requirements for third-party content use (publication of 18 subjects, including digital resources to support ~15,000 lessons)

  • Manage R&P production operations, including setting R&P standards, creating appropriate systems, assessing digital curriculum products for rights required, negotiating overarching agreements, and tracking rights activities

  • Work with stakeholders to plan R&P workflows, adhering to production schedules and budgets

  • As a member of the Oak Team, contribute to the planning and culture of the organisation

  • Work in cross-functional and product-oriented squads with colleagues from across the organisation, as required

  • Deputise for Programme Lead - Production and take on other general responsibilities as required

  • As a member of the Oak Team, contribute to the wider success of the organisation and support and role model our culture of freedom, responsibility, and continuous improvement.


Knowledge, skills, and experience

  • 5+ years experience in rights and permissions, with extensive copyright knowledge from working in digital publishing or a related sector

  • Experience in setting up, monitoring and improving R&P standards, systems and processes 

  • Proven success in negotiating permissions with rights holders to ensure rights management milestones are met for projects in the production workflow

  • Experience in line management and possessing strong stakeholder management skills to enable the successful candidate to become the R&P expert for Oak

The successful candidate will have a desire to contribute in all areas to ensure Oak is successful. You will be comfortable working at pace, with a range of digital systems (including proprietary ones as required) and you will continuously look at ways that the team can keep getting better. You will be excellent at working as part of a remote team, building relationships and managing your time effectively.
