Job Description

PURPOSE 

The primary purpose of this role is to ensure that men’s County 2nd XI, NCCA and Tier 2 women’s cricket is officiated by suitably skilled and trained umpires from the ECB National Panels (M2 and W2). The role holder will be expected to play a key role in influencing increased diversity in the umpiring workforce.

YOU’LL BE DOING

  • Contributing to developing a world class officiating programme which inspires the next generation of umpires.  

  • Identifying umpires from the National Panels with the potential to progress to the Professional Umpires’ Team and working with the Professional Umpires’ Manager to  support their development.  

  • Developing and implementing a competency-based training and development programme for National Panel umpires. 

  • Appointing National Panel umpires to, primarily,  men’s County 2nd XI, , National Counties and Tier 2 women’s cricket in England and Wales, providing opportunities primarily on the basis of performance and potential. 

  • Performance managing National Panel umpires. 

  • Putting in place effective administration processes to support National Panel umpires.  

  • Establishing relevant competencies and leading the selection, annually, of recreational umpires to the National Panels.  

  • Working with the Regional Officiating Development Officers (RODOs) to identify, and provide opportunities for, umpires considered to have the potential to progress to the National Panels.  

  • Recruiting, retaining, developing and deploying umpire developers/coaches to support National Panel umpires. 

YOU’LL HAVE

Knowledge:

  • Of how officiating pathways in sport work. 

  • Of how to establish structures that allow for the development of skills and attributes. 

  • Of the way in which cricket in England and Wales is structured.  

Experience:

  • As a sports match official. 

  • Appointing match officials. 

  • Managing and developing remote teams. 

  • Operating in a high development environment.  

  • Evaluating and managing the performance of others. 

  • Designing and delivering training programmes.  

  • Coaching/mentoring others in a high development environment. 

  • Working with a diverse range of people to ensure they can reach their potential. 

Skills:

  • Ability to develop and maintain positive relationships. 

  • Effective coaching and mentoring skills. 

  • Ability to work collaboratively. 

  • IT literate and competent in the use of Microsoft Office Applications and CRM systems. 

  • High level of planning and communication skills. 

  • Ability to manage change positively whilst under pressure.

  • Ability to provide clear, constructive data driven performance feedback to individuals.
