Job Description

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join one of the most innovative and ambitious operations in world publishing and play an integral role in shaping the identity of its Irish trade division.

HarperCollins Ireland, established in 2020, is a growing business committed to publishing the most diverse and exciting voices in Irish fiction and non-fiction, as well as promoting and selling titles from across the HarperCollins Group.

As the team's Assistant Editor, you will be tasked with helping the best-sellers and award-winners of the future achieve their full creative and commercial potential, by providing editorial support, assisting in the coordination of publishing activities, and collaborating with colleagues to help implement compelling creative plans for each title.

HarperCollins is already home to some of Ireland’s most successful authors, from best-selling novelists like Cecelia Ahern, Claire Allan, Jane Casey, Hazel Gaynor, Carmel Harrington and Melissa Hill, to children’s and YA stars like Eoin Colfer, Oliver Jeffers and Derek Landy. We have also published ground-breaking works of Irish-interest non-fiction from authors such as Fergal Keane, Samantha Power and Richard Chambers.

Key tasks and accountabilities

  • Support the Publisher with day-to-day administrative and editorial tasks

  • Maintain accurate and up to date records and documents using relevant systems to ensure the smooth-running of the list

  • Working closely with the Commissioning Editor, coordinate core publishing activities – such as the copy edit, proofread, typesetting and picture research – and ensure each is completed on time and to the highest possible standard

  • Monitoring progress of projects and liaising with relevant stakeholders to keep processes on track

  • Regular liaison with our network of freelancer editors, project managers and photographers

  • Ensure sales copy across the list has been uploaded in line with metadata schedule

  • General administration including invoicing and minute taking

Skills required

  • Extremely organised and efficient, able to juggle a diverse workload

  • Outstanding attention to detail

  • Strong copywriting skills

  • Experience working in an entry level role in publishing

  • Confident communication skills both internally and externally

  • Passionate about a wide range of fiction and non-fiction, with a demonstrable interest in the Irish publishing market

Benefits

  • Hybrid working model (2+ days in the office)

  • 25 days holiday plus bank holidays (option to buy and sell holiday days)

  • Enhanced pay for maternity, paternity, adoption and shared parental leave

  • Private healthcare cover and life assurance

  • Free access to HeadSpace, employee assistance programme (24 hour helpline), mental health first aiders, and a wellbeing portal

  • Cycle to work scheme

  • Employee networks: HC All In (open forum), Elevate (for ethnic minority colleagues), HarperParents, Menopause at Work and Pride at HC
