Job Description

We have a Desk Editor role is available within the incredible HarperCollins Children's Book division. This position will have desk-editorial responsibility for a range of titles across all areas of the list. This is not a commissioning role, but offers a rare opportunity for an accurate, organised, efficient and creative team player to step into a challenging editor’s role. The candidate will be an experienced and confident copy-editor and will have a meticulous eye for detail.

Responsibilities include:

  • Desk-editorial responsibilities such as copy-editing, proofreading, copywriting and supporting editors on a range of fiction titles, including digital formats.

  • Seeing titles through from manuscript to finished copies.

  • Updating relevant editorial listings as required to ensure accurate and up-to-date title/list information is available internally and externally.

  • Liaising with authors, illustrators and freelance copy-editors and proofreaders, ensuring plant costs are in line with budget for each project.

  • Reading manuscript submissions, and reporting on these, noting market context.

  • Supporting the commissioning team across the list under the Publishing Manager’s guidance.

Skills and experience

  • Strong desk-editorial experience in children’s books, preferably 2 years’ experience

  • Exceptional copy-editing and proofreading skills

  • Experience of structural editing which will be developed in the role

  • Extremely organised, efficient and self-motivated

  • Strong author care and interpersonal skills

  • Being a key, proactive member of a vibrant and creative editorial team with flair and passion for children’s fiction.
