Job Description

Would you like to be at the heart of developing innovative and transformative ideas? Are you interested in being part of a team that identifies how space technology can address UK and global societal challenges? Do you want a Service Designer position which will make a real difference? If so, you may be who we’re looking for!

We are currently seeking enthusiastic and passionate Service Designers to work with technical specialists, business experts, and end-users, blazing the trail in the space industry with a needs-driven rather than technology-pushed approach to application development.

We are looking for candidates for either junior or mid-level positions so if you have a passion for Service Design then we want to hear from you!

We have a hybrid working policy with our main offices based in Harwell, Oxfordshire.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support and lead design research and service design projects.

  • Design and facilitate creative workshops bringing together multiple stakeholders

  • Capture user requirements, carry out synthesis and analysis and translate them into design specifications

  • Work with stakeholders to develop and evaluate concepts based on user requirements.

  • Help manage internal and stakeholder engagement, e.g. liaising with project managers, EO specialists and end user-communities.

  • Develop and contribute to the User-centred Design teams’ tools and processes.

Skills & Experience we need:

  • You have demonstrable experience or training in one or more of the following design-related areas: design, design research, service design, interaction design, user experience, human factors, ergonomics, industrial design.

  • You have experience or training in planning and delivering design research and service design projects.

  • You can comfortably express yourself and your ideas with your preferred tools (e.g., Adobe Creative Cloud, Miro).

  • You can explain why understanding needs is essential to creating a sustainable solution, where sustainable doesn’t just mean green.

  • You know of or are willing to learn about the double-diamond and, if applying for a mid-level position have experience working in this way.

  • You are enthusiastic, organised, and able to motivate others.

  • You are comfortable working with and supporting a range of internal and external stakeholders e.g., project managers, business analysts and end user communities.

  • You are confident and/or willing to design and facilitate creative workshops bringing together multiple stakeholders.

Nice to have:

  • You have worked with technical teams to deliver digital service projects from inception to delivery.

  • You are entrepreneurial and either understand or are keen to learn how to create a sustainable business case.

  • You prototype as proof of concept, work visually as much as possible.

  • You have experience with using tools like Axure, AdobeXD, and Sketch for prototyping and UI design.

Behaviours we like to see:

  • You are a doer and want to see change happen in the world. You believe that User-centred Design is an essential tool in making change happen.

  • You act as a translator, encouraging and facilitating disparate groups with differing skills, values, and approaches to work together.

  • You can tell stories and use these narratives to bring people along with you.

  • You are naturally curious, are not afraid to ask questions and take time to listen and learn.

  • You want to influence how the team works, rather than simply following orders.
